The 24-hour solar-powered electricity project in Dig district, Jarar Zone, was officially inaugurated today in the presence of Federal and Regional Government officials.
The project, implemented with a total budget of 200 million Birr, has the capacity to generate 350 Kilowatts of electricity. It was developed through the collaboration of the Federal Ministry of Water and Energy, the Somali Regional State Urban Development and Construction Bureau, the Ethiopian Electric Utility, and their development partners.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, the State Minister of Water and Energy of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, Eng. Sultan Wali, stated that the project forms part of the Ministry’s broader strategy to expand access to reliable electricity services and strengthen economic integration between rural and urban communities.
On her part, the Deputy Minister of the Somali Regional State Mines, Energy and Petroleum Bureau, Idman Mahamud Ali, emphasized the transformative impact of clean energy on local communities.
“Clean energy is not only light; it is hope, job creation, business growth, and improved healthcare and education services. The 350 kW capacity means hundreds of families are moving out of darkness, while businesses gain new opportunities to grow,” she said.
The project is expected to significantly improve the livelihoods of residents in Dig district by providing reliable electricity access for households, businesses, schools, and healthcare facilities.
